Attention is being paid to whether a solution to the legislative conflict can be found at this meeting. Since the medical community is demanding the adjustment of medical school enrollment for the 2025 school year, which the government opposes, as a condition for participating in the ruling-opposition-medical-government consultative body, there are predictions that the meeting between President Yoon and Han will be a pivotal moment for the launch of the consultative body.
According to the passport on the 22nd, President Yoon will invite the People Power Party leadership, including Representative Han, to the presidential office in Yongsan on the 24th for a dinner meeting. Representative Han, floor leader Choo Kyung-ho, supreme council members, and key party officials, and from the presidential office, Chief of Staff Jeong Jin-seok, Policy Director Seong Tae-yoon, National Security Director Shin Won-sik, and senior secretaries will attend the dinner.
The dinner was originally scheduled for the 30th of last month, but the Blue House postponed it, saying, “We will look into public sentiment during Chuseok,” and this meeting was held this time.
Ahead of the dinner, the political world is focused on whether a solution to the legislative conflict can be found. The government is not reporting that the situation can be called a ‘disaster’, but anxiety over a medical disaster is deepening on the ground, with ’emergency room hopping’ occurring one after another.
Representative Han Dong-hoon’s plan to resolve the conflict between the ruling and opposition parties is as tangled as it can be. Although Representative Han proposed to find a solution through a consultative body of the ruling and opposition parties, the medical community is maintaining its position that it can only participate in the consultative body if the quota for medical schools in 2025 is adjusted. The government also made it clear that it is opposed to the fact that the regular admissions process is underway next year.
If garden adjustments are difficult, some are saying that replacing key government officials, such as Minister of Health and Welfare Cho Kyu-hong, should be used as leverage in negotiations.
The party leadership believes that a private meeting between President Yoon and Representative Han is inevitable before or after this dinner to solve such a high-order equation. This is because political decisions are usually made in private meetings. This is why the political world is paying attention to whether or not the private meeting will be successful.
A key party official said, “There is little point in discussing it in a gathering of many people from the presidential office and leadership,” adding, “Shouldn’t a political decision be made in a private meeting before or after a meal?”
If this meeting ends ’empty-handed’, Representative Han’s plan to resolve the issue through a consultative body will inevitably suffer a blow. The Democratic Party of Korea is taking the position that it will not join the consultative body unless major medical organizations such as the Korean Intern Resident Association and the Korean Medical Association participate. Kang Yoo-jung, the floor spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Korea, said in a briefing, “The only solution lies with the president himself,” and pressured the government and the ruling party by saying, “Representative Han Dong-hoon should also show his negotiating power.”
