The plans for the Christmas celebration began to be clarified when the Kaunas city municipality for more than 2 thousand. bought the “natural Christmas tree stand project preparation service” for 17 euros, and a public competition was held until July 17, during which the organizer of the Christmas tree lighting ceremony was sought.

When the Kaunas City Municipality asked what the aforementioned “natural Christmas tree stand” project would be used for, the head of the Culture Department, Agnė Augonė, dispelled all doubts about the new location of the Christmas tree.

“This year, Kaunas hopes to make its residents happy with a natural Christmas tree. The main decoration of the winter holidays is planned to be built on Unity Square. The project is being carried out so that it would be safe to build the green screen in the square, under which there is a parking lot,” A. Augonė commented to the news portal “What’s happening in Kaunas”.

She added that this year the Christmas tree is planned in a new place – Vienybės ištės – due to the soon-to-come reconstruction works of the City Hall Square.

Repair of the Town Hall Square

“What’s happening in Kaunas” reminds us that the reconstruction of the Town Hall Square is planned to start in the fall of this year, right after the outdoor cafe season.

At the moment, the preparatory work can already be seen in the square – one of the largest archaeological investigations ever carried out in the Old Town of Kaunas has begun in the Town Hall Square. They will include 4 thousand sq. meters area.

It is planned that after the reconstruction, the existing carriageway around the square will remain paved with stones. A granite coating is planned for the rest.

The entire pavement of the Town Hall Square will be of the same height, without curbs or other protrusions. Pedestrians have priority. In addition, it is planned to modernize the fountain located right there – it will be replaced by a stream of water gushing from the pavement.

As usual, the central area of the square will be used for celebrations, concerts and other events. Pavilions and markets can be located here.

The architects planned to preserve mature trees in good condition and create islands of greenery around them. Round benches of different sizes are designed next to it.

The Christmas tree had no place

The long-standing tradition that the city’s main fir tree stands in the Town Hall Square was started 16 years ago.

Before that, the Christmas tree didn’t have a single place – it stood in Vienybės aištės, at the place of the fountain on Laisvės aleja, near the Musical Theater and elsewhere.
