“While maintaining consistency, when this question was first asked, I said that Lithuania has valuable positions related to foreign policy or defense. Due to the fact that we do not directly represent the state’s interest in them, which is not our duty to do in the commission, we can also protect the state’s interest”, emphasized G. Landsbergis.
“By strengthening European defense (…), by strengthening European instruments to finance defense, we will also strengthen Lithuania. So Lithuania’s interest is definitely in that and I would really support it,” he added.
However, the minister assured that he could not yet confirm that A. Kubiliis is specifically assigned the portfolio of defense European commissioner.
“I’ve only heard hints, but I couldn’t confirm anything concrete,” he said.
“Berods was supposed to be approved today, but for some unknown reasons it was postponed until next week. Maybe there are some last-minute changes going on,” G. Landsbergis told reporters in the Seimas on Tuesday.
ELTA reminds that Politico, one of the most influential European publications, predicts that the Lithuanian candidate for the European Commission (EC), Andrius Kubilius, may receive the portfolio of defense, defense industry and space commissioner.
A. Kubilius himself has also stated that the defense commissioner’s portfolio would be one of the priorities for Lithuania.
The new EC should start work from 2024. November 1
