Together with the October pension, the Social Insurance Board will pay benefits to 62,401 pensioners living alone for a total amount of 12,480,200 euros. The benefit amount will be 200 euros, the press service of the Social Insurance Department told BNS on Tuesday.
Benefits for pensioners living alone are paid once a year to those people whose old-age pension is less than 1.2 times the average Estonian pension (in 2023 – less than 720 euros) and who, according to the population register, lives alone. Benefits are paid based on register data and a person does not have to apply to the department to receive them.
The head of the compensation department of the Social Insurance Department, Kati Kümnik, says that compared to last year, the number of benefit recipients this time is almost 30,000 lower. “There are fewer benefit recipients because, as a result of the April indexation, the average pension increased to 700 euros. Also, starting this year, the procedure for calculating income tax for people aged as an old-age pensioner has changed; the exemption is 704 euros per month,” Kumnik said.
The right to benefits for pensioners living alone applies to guardians and those under guardianship, as well as to people living in care homes. Also entitled to it are people who have another person registered in the same living space as them, but in reality they live alone, since the other tenant is in a care home. The department receives data on care home stays directly from the homes or from the register of social workers.
If an old-age pensioner receives, in addition to the Estonian pension, a pension from another state, then the right to the benefit of a pensioner living alone arises if the total pension is less than 720 euros. We ask such people to send to the department a statement of their bank account or other document proving the amount of their foreign pension.
The benefit will be paid along with the October pension.
