This year, Latvenergo will study several more potential sites for the construction of wind power plants

In order to develop wind power plants, JSC “Latvenergo” continues the environmental studies started in 2022, and this year also plans to start studies in several more potential construction sites, informs “Latvenergo” wind and solar park development director Ilvija Boreiko in the latest review of the electricity market.

She notes that “Latvenergo” has carried out an assessment of the entire territory of Latvia and identified the publicly available restrictions for the installation of wind power plants.

Boreiko explains that one of the peculiarities of the territory of Latvia is a large number of homesteads, as well as a mosaic landscape, which is popular with many protected birds. Accordingly, areas with no or few restrictions are limited. In addition, until now, at the level of national regulations or recommendations, no unified guidelines have been developed for the assessment of the impact of wind power plant projects, which would significantly facilitate the processes both during the implementation of research processes and for the harmonization of the environmental impact report.

In order to ensure a comprehensive assessment of aspects, “Latvenergo” conducts procurement for the selection of engineering consultants. In parallel, a pre-procurement consultation phase is being carried out with major turbine manufacturers.

Boreiko explains that one of the equipment manufacturers’ conditions for submitting bids is that the project implementer must have previously obtained permits, which give the right to start assembling the turbines without obstacles and within a predictable period.

“Latvenergo” is engaged in the production and trade of electricity and thermal energy, as well as natural gas trade and provision of electricity distribution services. “Latvenergo” belongs to the state, but the company’s bonds are listed on the debt securities list of the stock exchange “Nasdaq Riga”.
