“In the first five months of this year, there were fewer pre-trial investigations into domestic violence than in the same period last year. (…) This year we had one more murder, two additional serious health disorders compared to last year. A little more of those criminal acts causing more serious consequences were registered, but the overall background is slightly decreasing,” M. Akelaitis told LRT radio on Wednesday.

After several murders took place in Lithuania in the last few days, the police representative drew attention to the fact that some of these incidents were related to, or possibly killed by, suspected mentally disordered persons.

According to M. Akelaitis, the police recently discussed this topic with representatives of the Ministry of Health and other institutions. The police representative does not hide that their and other institutions’ opinions differ on this topic.

“We clearly understand that these are not criminals in the usual sense. People need help. The fact that the health system sees that mental health disorders cannot be treated by force, can only be treated with their consent, regardless of the fact that the person poses a danger to those around them. And we have a little difference of opinion”, taught M. Akelaitis.

He noted that the police lack suggestions on how to better help mentally ill and potentially dangerous persons.

“As for sustainable algorithms and escorts for such people, providing them with quality assistance so that they do not become criminals as a result of their illness or their relatives do not suffer because of their actions, at least I have not heard what could be done,” commented M. Akelaitis.
