Delhi’s wholesale market gets decorated months before the festival of Rakhi. This year too, this market has been decorated two months before. But this time the local rakhi market is a bit slow. Traders say that this time more rakhis from Kolkata and Rajkot are being sold. Not only this, due to the online market spreading across the country, people are coming to the market less. Come, let’s take a look at Delhi’s Rakhi market…
This time Rakhis from Kolkata and Rajkot
Sandeep Jain, who runs the 120-year-old shop of Pyarelal Amirchand Jain at Fatehpuri Chowk in Chandni Chowk, said that he has started making rakhis two months ago. There was a time when big foam rakhis were in vogue. These were also made in Delhi. Now the trend has changed. Rakhis from Kolkata and Rajkot have taken over the market. These are of small size.
Zari and Metal Rakhi
Sandeep tells that Kolkata’s rakhis have zari work and Rajkot’s rakhis have metal work. Cartoon character rakhis for children have also arrived in the market. Children like rakhis like Doraemon, Shinchan, Nobita, Chhota Bheem, Motu-Patlu, Ghatochkachch. Right now he has rakhis from 20 to 200 rupees. He sells rakhis both in wholesale and retail. Now only a week is left, so the demand in retail will increase. In the initial days of work, there has been good sale in wholesale. After the metro came, shopkeepers from cities like Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Gurugram come to Old Delhi to shop.
Rakhi-Lumbe-wali
Many new varieties of Lumba Rakhi have also come in the market. Sandeep Jain said that the trend of Lumba Rakhi has increased. After the marriage of the brother, the sisters also tie a Rakhi to their sister-in-law, which is called Lumba Rakhi. Bangle bracelets are also available for this. This also comes from Kolkata. It is believed that when a sister takes a promise of protection from her brother, then the sister-in-law also has to fulfill this promise along with the brother.
Fancy Rakhi Plate
Fancy Rakhi Plate has also arrived in the market. It contains roli, rice, sugar candy, bowl, Kalava, lamp and sandalwood. Sandeep told that the complete set of fancy Rakhi Plate is being sold in the market. Its price starts from Rs 100. Many times sisters have to travel. When they go to their brother’s place, they need many things while tying Rakhi. So that they do not have to search much, Rakhi Plate has been prepared.
Why did Rakhi’s work fail?
Anil Bhai Rakhi Wale of Sadar Bazaar says that the Rakhi business here has taken a beating as compared to previous years. It is raining in many places in the country. The goods have been damaged. Movement has also been affected. Many traders have old goods lying with them. Right now the demand is low and manufacturing is high. Secondly, the online market has also affected the business. Customers are getting goods sitting at home. But, customers are not able to see as many varieties as in the market.
