There is great concern for Thommy Schmelz: the emigrant was in hospital with kidney failure. Now there is an update on his health.
On Monday evening, Vox showed a new episode of “Goodbye Germany”. This time, viewers were taken back to Mallorca. There, not only Andreas and Caro Robens were accompanied by a camera team, but also Thommy Schmelz and his wife Kathrin.
In the latest Mallorca episode, however, the audience initially only got to see Kathrin Mermi-Schmelz. At the time of filming, her 53-year-old husband was in hospital with kidney failure.
As the 56-year-old reports in Monday’s episode, it all started during a cruise. They went to Madeira with the Aida. As soon as they got on the ship, the emigrant felt unwell. “The next morning we had a sea day on the way to Madeira. Thommy felt so bad that he said on his own that he was going to see the doctor,” says Kathrin.
A life-saving decision. Thommy was immediately transferred to the intensive care unit. “They said it was very serious, he had a lot of water in his stomach and his organs weren’t working properly.” The 53-year-old had been suffering from problems with his pancreas for some time. “My kidneys and liver aren’t working properly anymore either,” explained Kathrin Mermi-Schmelz through tears.
The doctors advised flying back to Mallorca as soon as possible. They suspected that Thommy would soon no longer be able to travel. After arriving in Palma, the emigrant was immediately taken back to the intensive care unit and treated.
He is now back home. After the show, Thommy Schmelz and his wife Kathrin gave their fans an update via Instagram. “A lot of things have happened in the last few months. Now we just wanted to bring you up to speed,” says the 56-year-old in a video. “Tommy, as you can see, is at home with me. He’s actually doing well since his last hospital stay.”
In addition to the kidney and liver problems, Thommy also struggled with Covid-19. “Corona got in the way. If it gets to anyone, it’s me.” He was immediately moved back to the intensive care unit. “Quarantine – not allowed to leave the room,” said Thommy.
A spot was also discovered on his lung. “A biopsy will be done on Thursday.” The couple hopes that it is just a shadow. “We hope we can get everything back on track,” the two say confidently, but concern remains high.
