Last week, two of Russia’s last major independent broadcasters, Echo Moskvy and the Dozhd TV channel (international name: Rain TV), fell silent as a result of state repression. Journalists who spread “false information” about the armed forces can be sentenced by law to up to 15 years in prison. The respected “Novaya Gazeta” – edited by Nobel Peace Prize winner Dmitry Muratov – is therefore removing content about the conflict in Ukraine out of fear of prosecution of its journalists.
