A security source said that “dozens of civilians and defense and security forces were killed, as well as many wounded,” confirming the attack on the village of Barsalogo.
He added that the wounded were evacuated to Kaya, about 45 kilometers from the site of the attack.
According to one resident, the victims were mostly “young civilians who went out in large numbers to help the soldiers dig trenches around the village, to protect themselves from possible attacks by armed terrorist groups.” He said, “We have buried a lot of the victims.”
A second security source said, “The response of soldiers and volunteers to protect the homeland (that is the name given to civilian helpers who fight alongside the army) allowed to neutralize many terrorists and avoid a bigger tragedy .”
