Emphasizes rapid information exchange through text-based SNS
Beta service for sharing ‘comments/likes’ with other SNS
25% of all domestic posts include images… Emphasis on visual elements
“Thread has 175 million monthly active users. We are creating a friendly space where people can quickly exchange information and freely share content.
Emily Dalton Smith, Vice President of Thread Products, shared Thread’s achievements over the past year and future direction at the ‘Thread App 1st Anniversary APAC Media Briefing’ on the 9th.
He explained, “Since its launch last year, we have been actively accepting user feedback and improving the service,” and “We are continuously updating functions with a focus on three aspects: quick information exchange and interest exploration, friendly yet safe communication, and creator support.”
Threads is a text-based social media service (SNS) launched by Instagram in July of last year with the vision of becoming a space where anyone can freely express their thoughts and interests. After logging in with your Instagram account, you can communicate with people around the world through posts of up to 500 characters in length, as well as links, photos, videos, and audio.
“We developed Threads because we heard from many people who wanted a separate social network where they could share and discuss real-time news based on text,” said Vice President Smith. “Threads believes that ‘everyone has valuable thoughts,’ and we are working to create the best space for that.”
As Thread is a text-based SNS, it was revealed that more than 63% of all thread posts were written only in text without images. In Korea, it was reported that 25% of all posts included images, confirming the characteristics of Korean users who value visual elements.
“Threads are about emphasizing timeliness and trying to increase connectivity across communities,” said VP Smith. “Threads allow you to tag posts with topics, much like hashtags on Instagram. So far, we’ve created over 50 million topic tags. The most popular tags have been photography, books, fitness, art and Taylor Swift.”
In particular, he emphasized that Thread, despite being a text-based SNS, has many young users in their 20s and 30s. He said, “The user base of Instagram and Thread is almost the same,” and “I don’t think the age of Thread users is high.”
Threads also offer a variety of safety features, including filtering offensive words, controlling who is allowed to be mentioned, and blocking and restricting accounts. All content and accounts in threads are subject to Instagram’s Community Guidelines.
In order to support creators, the ‘Fediverse’ sharing function, which aims for an ‘open social network’, has also been introduced. Fediverse is a compound word of federation and universe, and refers to a system in which multiple SNSs operated as independent servers interoperate through a common protocol.
To this end, we recently updated the function to allow sharing of ‘Likes’, ‘Comments’, etc. with another SNS, ‘Mastodon’. It is currently in beta operation targeting some users, but as it gradually expands, it is expected that users and creators will be able to build a large-scale community across apps.
“Threads are aimed at allowing users to be more responsive and timely, and we’re getting a lot of feedback from the Pedverse community to do that,” said Vice President Smith.
