The dominant strain of the coronavirus in Russia remains the delta strain. For the entire time of the pandemic in the country, only three cases of the mu coronavirus strain and one case of the lambda coronavirus strain were detected, said Vasily Akimkin, director of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor.

“The lambda strain in our territory of the Russian Federation, when updating the variants, was encountered only once, and the mu gene variant – three times,” said Mr. Akimkin at the scientific and practical congress “Topical issues of state sanitary and epidemiological surveillance in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation” (quote according to “Interfax”).

Earlier in Russia, cases of infection with a new variant of the delta strain of coronavirus – AY.4.2 were recorded. According to Jeffrey Barrett, director of the Wenger Institute at the Cambridge Genomic Research Center and Francois Ballou, director of the Institute of Genetics at University College London, the new variant of the coronavirus is 10-15% more infectious than the delta strain.
