In his book Carrement Frites, the Belgian author Albert Verdian mentions that the first French fries were made in the Nammur region of Belgium. The people there have been loving and eating fish fingers. When the lakes froze in the 1680s and fish became scarce, potatoes were traditionally cut into lengths like fishfinger and fried in oil. The incident took place in southern Belgium, where people speak French. The book states that when American soldiers arrived during World War I, they began to call it the French Prize.

But French professor Pierre-Julien Leclair denies the allegations are completely false. The reason, he argues, is that since potatoes were not produced in Namur in the 1630s, the French Price in Belgium is unlikely to have been born. The French people also say that French fries were made in 1780 in a restaurant near the Paul Bond Newf in Paris. Following the White House, French fries were well received in the United States in the 1850s. It is said to have been called French fries because one of the French chefs fried the potatoes in oil. This is further confirmed by US President Thomas Jefferson’s reference to the 19th century manuscript in the Pommes de Terre frites en petites tranches.
