Four workers died in an explosion at a hydroelectric plant near Bologna, ANSA reported, citing the local prefecture. Five people were injured in the incident. Three workers are missing, according to updated figures. Three other workers were unharmed after the incident.

The explosion occurred around 15:00 local time at the Suviana Lake Power Plant.

The plant affected by the incident is operated by the energy group ENEL, adds France Press. The site is located next to the town of Camuniano.

In a statement from the company, it is said that a fire also broke out affecting a transformer in the plant. The company has taken measures to remove the personnel from the site.

The plant’s dam was not affected, but power generation was halted. This will not affect electricity supply at the local and national level, the company says.

Calogero Turturici, a representative of the local firefighters, said that it is not yet possible to say what the causes of the accident were. The premises where the explosion took place are partially flooded and filled with smoke and cannot be entered at this stage.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani said they were monitoring the situation with concern.
