Three departments concentrated 61% of homicides in 2023

In 2023 the number of homicides decreased by 2% compared to the same period of the previous year, that is, it went from 3,004 to 2,944 (60 fewer deaths), according to the report from the National Economic Research Center (CIEN).

Panorama. The current data shows that the homicide rate per 100 thousand inhabitants reflects a decrease of 0.6 points, closing at 16.7. The departments that registered the most cases were Guatemala, Escuintla, Izabal, Petén and Chiquimula.

  • “Guatemala recorded more than 44% of homicides and together with Escuintla and Izabal, they account for 61% of all cases,” explained Walter Menchú, CIEN Citizen Security researcher.
  • He added that the analysis at the municipal level establishes that 14 municipalities accounted for half of all homicides and 110 municipalities did not register homicides (32% of the 340 municipalities).
  • The five municipalities with the highest rates were Zacapa (69.1), Tiquisate (66.6), Villa Canales (56.9), Morales (56.2) and La Gomera (55.2).

Data. Menchú explained that homicides of women were 13% of the total in 2023 and were 16% less than in 2022 (68 fewer homicides of women).

  • In the case of men it is different, since eight (0.3%) more homicides were reported than the previous period.

  • “This type of information on the geographical location of homicides is important, since it provides valuable data to authorities to be able to design targeted strategies to combat this scourge with greater success,” he added.
