Three former prime ministers, three convergent opinions: Matignon must take charge of the New Caledonia file, whose dual political and economic crisis is causing growing concern, Manuel Valls, Jean-Marc Ayrault and Edouard told the National Assembly. But the separatists are demanding the withdrawal of the reform, carried out by the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin.
They fear seeing the Kanaks put in a minority, with the planned addition of 25,000 voters, born in New Caledonia since 1998 or residing there for ten years, citizens hitherto excluded from the lists by derogation from universal suffrage to preserve the fragile political-ethnic balance of the territory. In fact, all the balance of power between the non-independenceists and the separatists, who have led the Caledonian government since 2021, depend on these provincial elections.
“Reserved area”
