The Associated Press reports that Calvin Bautista, 36, hid the snakes on a bus that entered upstate New York on July 15, 2018. He is now under arrest in that case. Importation of Burmese pythons is prohibited by international treaty and federal law, and Burmese pythons are listed as injurious to humans. Bautista was arraigned this week in New York’s capital Albany on federal smuggling charges. According to the report, he was later released for trial.

The Burmese python is one of the largest snakes in the world. It is considered a vulnerable species in Asia. However, this species of snake is included in the list of invasive species in Florida, USA. Florida law says it’s a threat to native animals. Calvin Bautista, accused of smuggling three Burmese pythons from Canada, faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.

The Burmese python is one of the five largest snakes in the world. They are found in the tropical regions of South Asia. Live near water bodies. Baby snakes hang from tree branches. An adult snake can be about 3.7 m (12 ft) to 5.74 m (19.00 ft) long and weigh 90 kg.
