Three questions to Anas Bekkali, multiple skydiving record holder

by times news cr

1- To begin, tell us about yourself and your discipline?

Anas Bekkali. I am 32 years old. I am a professional skydiver. I was born in Khenifra and I currently reside in the United Arab Emirates and more precisely in Dubai where I work as a skydiving instructor.

I have been practicing this extreme sport since 2009, straddling the United Arab Emirates and the United States of America. I have to my credit more than 11,000 parachute jumps in different countries, night and day.

During my 11 years of practicing this discipline, I managed to set nine world records. Skydiving is a very expensive sport that can only be practiced at the age of 18. It takes a lot of effort and years of training and practice to be able to perform in this high-risk discipline.
2- What is your fondest sporting memory so far?

Unquestionably, the jump that I made on November 6, 2017 above Mount Everest, on the occasion of the anniversary of the Green March and during which I unfurled a Moroccan flag on the roof of the world 10 meters by 10 meters. Through this project, which cost more than $175,000, I achieved two world records at once, that of the largest flag ever displayed on the summit of Everest, and that of the highest flag ever hoisted in the world, 11 km above sea level.

To achieve this exceptional jump, I spent two weeks in the freezing Himalayan mountains, in extremely harsh weather conditions so that my body could acclimatize to the high altitudes and produce enough red blood cells.

3- What are your projects, your sporting prospects?

I plan to achieve other world records and embark on new challenges and adventures. I plan to face the rigors of the North and South poles of the Globe where I plan to perform spectacular parachute jumps equipped of course with the national flag with which I have become inseparable on the ground and in the air. It’s a huge project that I’ve been thinking about for a very long time. However, its realization requires several months of preparation and, above all, a lot of resources. For the moment, it is pending due to lack of support and sponsors.

Also, for four years I have been working on a project that is very close to my heart, that of making a promotional film on “Morocco seen from the sky by parachute”. I intend to perform parachute jumps in different places in Morocco in order to show, through aerial shots, the richness of the kingdom’s landscapes and the diversity of its tourist attractions, both natural and cultural.
