Idukki: The shutters of Idukki Dam were opened. 100 cu mex of water was released. The amount of water released is 100,000 liters per second. Excess released water reached the tank. There is no significant difference in the water level.
As part of the opening of the Idukki Dam, precautions have been taken in Ernakulam. Relief camps have been set up in all taluks. The district administration has informed that even if Idamalayar Dam has to be opened, all preparations have been made. Minister P. Rajeev said that there is no need to worry in the current situation.
The district administration is of the opinion that even if the dam is opened, the water will not enter the houses of the people on the banks of Periyar. A precautionary notice has been issued to 79 families. 23 places have been found to start the camp. Announcements were also made in Idukki, Kanjikuzhi, Thangamani, Vathikudi and Upputhod villages.
Idukki Dam has been opened very few times. The dam was opened twice in 1981. 32.88 million cubic meters of water was released that day. The dam was opened after 11 years in 1992. 78.57 million cubic meters of water was released that day. Then after 26 years, the dam will be opened for the flood of 2018. 1068.32 million cubic meters of water was released from the dam that day. The opening of the dam in 2021 was much discussed. The dam was opened 4 times in the last three months.
