Three residents were injured in a fire in a retirement home in Vienna-Favoriten on Monday night. The women, aged 62, 82 and 91, were taken to the hospital with mild smoke poisoning, reported the fire brigade and professional rescue service. Numerous senior citizens were also brought to safety. The professional rescue and social medical service (SMD) cared for a total of 27 people, some of whom had to be transferred to other houses.

The fire was reported at 1.30 a.m. by the resident of the affected unit herself, fire department spokesman Jürgen Figerl reported to APA. A large-scale operation then took place at the old people’s home on Neilreichgasse. The flames were fought by firefighters from inside and outside. The balcony of the residential unit was also caught in the fire, reported Figerl. The fire was quickly under control and was then extinguished.

According to Figerl, the surrounding residential units were so smoky that they were temporarily uninhabitable. The fire brigade handed over numerous residents to the rescue service. Some could be accommodated in other areas of the home, but some were moved to other residences. The professional rescue was on the spot with buses from the special task force, explained Daniel Melcher, spokesman for the professional rescue.

The fire brigade pushed the smoke out of the building with ventilation equipment and was on duty for around four hours until 5:30 a.m. The police are investigating the cause of the fire, which is still unknown.
