Three ukrainian drones were shot down during an attack on Moscow, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Sunday morning, forcing the temporary closure of an international airport.

While one of the drones was shot down on the outskirts of the city, two others were “suppressed by electronic warfare” and crashed into an office complex. No one was hurt.

Moscow and its environs, some 500 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, have rarely been targeted, but this year they have suffered several drone attacks.

Sunday’s report is the latest in a series of drone strikes – including those aimed at the Kremlin and some Russian cities near the Ukrainian border – which Moscow assigned to Kiev.

The Russian Ministry of Defense classified the act as an “attempted terrorist attack”.

“On the morning of July 30, the terrorist attack that the Kiev regime tried to carry out with unmanned aerial vehicles over the city of Moscow was thwarted,” the ministry said on its Telegram account.

“A Ukrainian drone was destroyed in the air by defense systems over the territory of the Odintsovo district of the Moscow region,” the source said.

“Two other drones were suppressed by electronic warfare and, having lost control, crashed into the grounds of a complex of non-residential buildings in the city of Moscow,” he added.

Moscow-City is a commercial development in the west of the city.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin posted on Telegram that “the facades of two office towers in the city were slightly damaged”, adding that there were no casualties or injuries.

airport temporarily closed

Russian state news agency TASS reported that Vnukovo International Airport, which serves the capital, was “closed for departures and arrivals” and its flights were redirected to other cities.

In less than an hour, air operations appeared to be back to normal.

In early July, a series of drone strikes briefly disrupted air traffic operations at the same airport, located southwest of the city.

The drone strikes against Moscow come several weeks after the start of a Ukrainian counter-offensive to recapture territory captured by Moscow since the start of the war in February 2022.

The Russian Foreign Ministry had said that these attacks “would not have been possible without the help provided to the Kiev regime by the The United States and its NATO allies“.

missile attacks

On Friday, Russia said it had intercepted two Ukrainian missiles over the southern Rostov region on the border with Ukraine, injuring at least 16 people in the debris that landed in the town of Taganrog.

The ministry said the first S-200 missile was targeting “residential infrastructure” in Taganrog, a city of about 250,000 people.

Shortly afterwards, he said, he shot down a second S-200 missile near the town of Azov, whose debris landed in an uninhabited area.

On the other side of the border, a Russian missile attack in the city of Zaporizzhia, in southern Ukraine, killed two people, a man and a woman, local authorities said.

In addition, at least one person was killed by a missile strike in the Ukrainian town of Soumy on Saturday night and five people were injured, according to police.

In early July, an attack by Russian drone hit a residential building in Soumy, leaving three dead and 21 injured.
