through pain, but we did it

“Through the pain, but still because of that, we did this and that,” G. Nausėda said in an interview published on Monday by delfi.lt, when asked how he would evaluate the work with the center-right majority in the Seimas.

“I think we have preserved political stability. Those disagreements, tensions – there were many of them. Nevertheless, there were no obvious political crises that stopped the entire political process. But I don’t know if the people of Lithuania are still in the mood to see the confrontation or competition of the authorities in the next four years. I believe that it is possible to agree, to look in a certain direction. But, of course, then political forces should come to power, which have a more similar approach to social matters, certain economic solutions”, said the president.

G. Nausėda does not deny that his mistakes can be seen in his relations with those in power. However, the head of the country emphasized, the tone of communication was set by the conservatives in the first weeks of the term.

“When the ruling coalition or its main party wins the elections, already in the second week there is talk about the need to abolish some of the president’s competences, specifically – to represent the country in the European Council of Leaders (ECC). It means that here it is like in a hurdle race – the barrier is kicked first, then the rhythm adjusts,” the president recalled the initiatives of the conservatives.

“I’ve actually tried to communicate constructively more than once, but all the time I feel a certain competitive heat and a desire to measure up. Some measure in buttons, some measure in shoulders and muscles. It was the desire to try,” he said.

The head of the country thinks – it is possible that this behavior of the rulers may be related to a certain immature, youthful maximalism.

“But we survived all this. We came out of it stronger. And, I think that in this senseless process of muscle testing, the elections showed that those parties that wanted to test their muscles lost voters and they lost the presidential election crushingly”, argued G. Nausėda.

ELTA reminds that during the last term of office of the Seimas, there were many disputes between the Presidency and those in power. Disagreements were most evident when discussions arose regarding representation in the Council of European Leaders (ECC) and seeking a consensus on the appointment of ambassadors.
