Europe Day is celebrated today, Thursday 9 May.
It was precisely on 9 May 74 years ago – in 1950 – that the then French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman proposed, with his famous “declaration”, the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community, the first nucleus of what today it is our European Union.
On this anniversary we remember, in particular, two passages:
“World peace cannot be safeguarded except with creative efforts, proportional to the dangers that threaten it.”
“Europe cannot be created all at once, nor will it be built all together; it will arise from concrete achievements that first of all create de facto solidarity.”
