THW Kiel Prevents Upset in Bern, Remains Undefeated in European League
Despite a spirited first-half performance from the hosts, THW Kiel secured a 35-27 victory over BSV Bern in the Handball-European-League on November 11, 2025, narrowly avoiding what some are calling a potential “Wunder von Bern.” The win maintains Kiel’s perfect record in the group stage.
Just over 50 hours after a Bundesliga match against Bergischer HC, Kiel traveled nearly 1,000 kilometers to Switzerland for their first-ever encounter with the Swiss Vice Champions. The “Mobiliar Arena” was sold out, with over 60 THW Kiel fans providing vocal support.
First-Half Challenge from the Swiss Underdogs
BSV Bern presented a formidable challenge in the first half, exceeding expectations and briefly threatening an upset. The Swiss team demonstrated strong play, putting themselves in a position to potentially secure a sensational victory. However, Kiel adjusted their strategy after the break.
“Every person in Bern is looking forward to our THW Kiel, and I am also very excited to return to Switzerland,” said a Kiel player with Swiss roots, Lukas Laube, prior to the match. “The challenge is there. If we are not one hundred percent focused, it could be unpleasant.”
Kiel Dominates Second Half, Secures Victory
Kiel responded to the early pressure by increasing the tempo in the second half, ultimately taking control of the match and solidifying their position as group favorites. The team’s increased intensity proved too much for Bern to handle, leading to a decisive victory.
The match wasn’t without its concerns for Kiel. In the 47th minute, Elias Ellefsen á Skipagøtu, considered Kiel’s best player, sustained an arm injury after falling to the court. This occurred just before a crucial weekend in the Daikin Handball-Bundesliga, where Kiel faces league-leading Füchse Berlin, while Flensburg takes on Magdeburg. Fortunately, Ellefsen was able to continue playing.
Rising Stars Shine for THW Kiel
Beyond the established players, the match provided an opportunity for emerging talent to showcase their skills. Leon Nowottny, a 20-year-old goalkeeper, delivered a standout performance with 12 saves, significantly contributing to Kiel’s success. Rasmus Ankermann, 18, also made a noticeable impact on the court. Additionally, A-Jugend (youth) player Johann Rohwer made his debut for the team.
A moment of tension arose during the game, described as a rare sight in handball: a “Rudel-Bildung” – a scrum-like formation – following a hard foul on a Kiel star player.
THW Kiel remains undefeated in the Handball-European-League, securing their third consecutive group stage win and preventing a repeat of the historic “Wunder von Bern.”
