Tibor Navracsics: The people of Mórahalmi set an example

Tibor Navracsics said that being a city is a rank, not only in the administrative sense, but also a civilizational achievement. There are cities that, thanks to fortunate geographical features, emerged almost by themselves as ecclesiastical or commercial centers. At the same time, there are “made-up cities”, which were created from scratch by a party or state power, the politician said.

Mórahalom does not belong to either category: it was created by the will of the citizens. Following the work of the community, it first became a farm center, a village, a large village, a city, and then a district seat during the past century, said Tibor Navracsics. According to him, it is difficult to find a more convincing success story.

The tenacity and hard work of the people of Homokhát created a public good that made the settlement one of the centers of the southern part of Hungary. Mórahalom is an attractive tourist, economic and cultural center not only from Hungary, but also from the other side of the border, the minister said.

Tibor Navracsics drew attention to the fact that the development of the settlement also sheds light on a very important part of the history of Hungarian urbanization: the work of self-sufficient Hungarian farmers who started to build a community and wanted to increase the common good.

Sándor Farkas, the parliamentary state secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, said that Mórahalom is the most dynamically developing settlement in the Southern Great Plain. The region and the entire country are exemplary, as the people who live here think together, as well as the cooperation with which the community works for the future.

Mayor Zoltán Nógrádi (Fidesz-KDNP) said in his celebratory speech that the people living here developed their place of residence over the decades with honest and persistent work. As he said, “in this region, it was always a duty to leave more to our descendants than we received”.

When they thought about tourism development, they considered Hajdúszoboszló as an example, and during the development of the industrial park, the surrounding big cities. They dreamed of a growing population, new neighborhoods, flourishing gardens in the semi-desert, and developed a food industry, said the politician.

In recent decades, the Balkan war, the migration sweeping through the region, and nowadays climate change, the fact that the desert is trying to reclaim what the community has created over the decades, have been a serious challenge – the mayor said, stressing that the realization of the water supply of the Sand Ridge is of utmost importance.
