Are you ready for less work in your garden? Do you have no time or are you physically unable to maintain your garden, or do you simply not have a green thumb? Then this blog with tips about a tight maintenance-free garden is for you.

A tight maintenance-friendly garden; ideas and tips

Many of us dream of a beautiful garden, but the reality is often different. Time, energy and money spent on maintaining a garden can add up over the years. And in some cases, choosing a garden that requires a lot of maintenance is simply not an option.

But you can still enjoy your garden! If the above also applies to you, you can create a beautiful, sleek, maintenance-free garden that you can still relax in. You just have to take a few things into account to make it a nice garden.

1. If necessary, opt for artificial grass in your garden

There is a simple solution that allows you to enjoy a beautiful outdoor space without all the work; lay artificial grass in your garden!

What is artificial grass?

Artificial turf, also known as astroturf for example, is made from nylon or polyethylene fibers and is designed to mimic natural grass. It comes in different colours, lengths and thicknesses so you can choose the look that best suits your taste.

One of the main advantages of artificial grass is that it does not require irrigation or fertilization. In addition, it is very durable and can withstand heavy foot traffic and other wear and tear better than natural grass.

Maintenance of artificial grass in your sleek maintenance-free garden

Unlike real grass, artificial grass does not need to be mowed or watered regularly. This means you spend less time doing yard work and more time enjoying your outdoor space!

It also takes considerably less effort to weed; weeds don’t stand a chance against this low maintenance option, an occasional brushing of the mat should be enough.

Artificial grass is permeable to water

The great advantage of artificial grass is that it is also permeable to water, provided it is laid properly. It is therefore certainly better to lay a part of artificial grass in your garden instead of paving your entire garden.

In addition, it also gives a completely different look to your garden while it is still sleek and maintenance-free.

2. Plants for your maintenance-free garden, sleek yet cosy

A garden without plants generally does not have a pleasant appearance. If you want to be able to sit comfortably in your garden, it is nice if you have a few planters in your garden, for example.

Then you are of course looking for maintenance-free or low-maintenance plants in your garden that also support a sleek appearance. We do have some examples of that. The plants below are perennials, so that also means that you only have to plant once and enjoy them every year.

Coneflower is a perennial that is fairly maintenance-free. You prefer to place it in full sun and that’s it.

Furthermore, it needs few extras, so useful if you want a maintenance-free garden with some color in the sleek whole.

We also have lily grass in the garden. A very nice plant that requires little maintenance and fits fantastic in sleek and modern gardens if you ask me.

It is available in purple and white, both are very beautiful. It is a perennial that flowers a little later in the year, from about August.

On the left you see lamp cleaner grass (we also have it in our garden). This plant is also very easy to maintain, in fact, you don’t actually have to do anything about it.

You only need to prune it back in the spring for maintenance. No more.

You don’t have an extra color in your garden, but you do have beautifully waving ears.

3. Paving in your garden

Of course you would like a terrace in your garden to set up a lovely lounge set or dining table. However, keep in mind that too much paving is tight, but absolutely not maintenance-free in your garden.

Pavement quickly turns green from algae growth in winter. You can of course treat that green deposit, but you have to do something about it.

Furthermore, weeds will certainly get between the tiles. The larger the tiles you lay in your maintenance-free garden, the less weeds you will have in your tight garden.

Furthermore, ceramic tiles have a great advantage over, for example, concrete tiles, which are also much easier to maintain. And if they are properly laid, you will not be bothered by weeds.

3. A few large compartments for plants, not too many pots

This tip is definitely one that you should take to heart if you want a sleek maintenance-free garden.

For example, it is much more convenient to have two large planters that you fill with lavender than to have 10 smaller decorative pots with all kinds of different plants.

You prune the lavender once a year and you’re done. The ornamental pots must all have their own treatment and weekly water. In the summer even more.

Plants in solid ground also need water much less often than plants in pots, which makes them more suitable for a tight, maintenance-free garden.

4. Choose gravel if you want variety in your garden

Gravel in the garden is – if it is lying – fairly maintenance-free and still provides some variety in the garden. Make sure you have anti-root cloth under the gravel so that weeds have less chance.

Rake every now and then and you’re done. Only if you have many trees in the area that drop their leaves, it is smart to think carefully about whether you really want gravel. Then it is less maintenance-free because you have to remove all the leaves from between the gravel.

But if the leaves are dry, you can get started with a leaf blower if you do not want to leave the leaves in the garden.

5. Choose evergreen plants for a sleek, maintenance-free garden

If you do think carefully about the maintenance-free plants in your tight garden, it is also smart to take a good look at the evergreen plants. These plants do not drop their leaves, because again a lot of difference is made in clearing the leaves.

Briefly summarized

Adding artificial grass to your garden is one of the quickest ways to create a beautiful outdoor space without all the hassle of maintaining a traditional lawn.

Not only do you save time by skipping routine tasks like watering and mowing, you also save money thanks to its durability and the fact that you don’t need fertilizers or irrigation.

You can also add a few separate planters for some color to your garden, or large planters with perennials that are evergreen, for example. In any case, choose maintenance-free plants for your sleek garden so that you have more time to enjoy.

In terms of terrace, you choose larger tiles, or ceramic tiles that are laid in the cement to prevent weeds.

If you want some more variety in your maintenance-free garden, you can also use gravel for a sleek look.
