The European Union fined Tik Tok 345 million euros for violating minors’ privacy laws. The fine follows an investigation by Irish authorities, as the platform’s European headquarters are located in Dublin.
Among the irregularities are the way in which the accounts of users under 16 are public by default and the lack of verification to prove whether those responsible for parental control of minors’ accounts are actually family members or legal guardians of the children.
Brussels gave Tik Tok three months to resolve the issues and comply with European privacy rules.
The platform disputes the value of the fine and ensures that the changes were made long ago, as the investigation focused exclusively on the period between July and December 2020.
