Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has accused TikTok and Instagram of inciting hatred in the country.
As reported by Day.Az with reference to TASS, Maduro said this while speaking to his supporters at a march.
“I want to ask TikTok if it allows such fascist and hateful videos to be shown in the US and Europe? And no, they don’t. They want to infect Venezuela with hatred and division. TikTok is legally responsible for what they do against Venezuela, just like Instagram,” Maduro told his supporters at the march.
As the Venezuelan leader noted, in recent days, videos calling for violence against supporters of the current Venezuelan government have been circulating on TikTok.
On July 28, Venezuela held presidential elections. As the country’s National Electoral Council announced after processing almost 97% of the protocols, 51.95% of voters voted for Maduro, while 43.18% voted for his main rival, Edmundo González. One of the opposition leaders, María Corina Machado, already announced on the day of the vote that González’s team would not recognize his defeat in the elections.
The following day, protests and riots broke out in central Caracas. According to Venezuelan authorities, more than 1,000 rioters were arrested for arson and other offenses, more than 70 law enforcement officers were injured, and two soldiers were killed.
