(Reuters) - ByteDance-owned TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew has sought input from Elon Musk, a close adviser to President-elect Donald Trump, on U.S. affairs, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday, citing people they are familiar with the topic.
Chew has initiated messages with the Tesla (NASDAQ:) CEO in recent weeks and has asked for his opinion on topics ranging from the new government to potential technology policy, the report adds.
Both executives did not discuss specific measures to keep TikTok operating in the United States, the Journal reported, adding that Chew has kept ByteDance’s senior leadership informed of the talks, with executives cautiously optimistic about finding a way forward.
ByteDance executives were hedging their bets ahead of the US election, meeting with people close to Trump and those close to Democratic candidate Kamala, the report adds.
Trump, who unsuccessfully tried to ban TikTok in 2020, said that if elected in November he would not allow TikTok to be banned.

How might TikTok’s strategy influence the future of social media regulation in the United States?
Interview with Tech Industry Expert on TikTok’s Future in the U.S.
Editor: Thank you for joining us today. We’re discussing a recent report about TikTok’s CEO Shou Zi Chew reaching out to Elon Musk for insights on U.S. affairs. What does this mean for the platform as it navigates the current political landscape?
Expert: Thank you for having me. This move indicates TikTok’s proactive strategy to engage influential figures as it grapples with regulatory pressures in the U.S. By consulting with Musk, a major player not just in tech but also with his connections to the new administration, TikTok is clearly looking for guidance that could help shape its operational strategies during a potentially tumultuous period.
Editor: It’s interesting to note that Chew hasn’t discussed specific measures to keep TikTok operating in the U.S. What does this suggest about the company’s stance?
Expert: It points to a broader strategy of maintaining a dialogue and building relationships rather than rushing into decisions. By keeping ByteDance’s senior leadership informed and cautiously optimistic, Chew is likely aiming to position TikTok favorably, regardless of the election outcome. This approach shows that TikTok recognizes the importance of diplomacy in corporate governance, especially in a politically charged climate.
Editor: With the upcoming U.S. elections, how significant is it that TikTok executives are meeting with people close to both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris?
Expert: It underscores the importance of a balanced approach to political engagement. By hedging their bets and connecting with both sides of the aisle, TikTok is positioning itself as a platform that can adapt to whichever administration comes to power. This flexibility can be crucial for its long-term survival in the U.S. market, especially given Trump’s previous attempts to ban the platform and his recent assurances against a ban if he’s re-elected.
Editor: What implications do these developments have for TikTok users and advertisers?
Expert: For users, it means that TikTok will likely strive to maintain its operations without significant interruptions, which is reassuring. For advertisers, stability in the platform means they can continue to invest in TikTok as a key channel for reaching younger demographics. However, they should remain vigilant about potential regulatory changes that could impact advertising strategies in the future.
Editor: As a practical tip for businesses currently leveraging TikTok for marketing, what should they be aware of as these political discussions unfold?
Expert: Businesses should stay informed about ongoing regulatory debates and how TikTok adapts to the political landscape. Diversifying their digital marketing strategies and considering alternative platforms can mitigate risks. It’s also essential to engage with TikTok’s evolving advertising features and stay connected to community updates, as the platform may introduce new tools aimed at reassuring advertisers of its stability.
Editor: Thank you for your insights! It seems clear that TikTok’s navigation of U.S. affairs will be critical in shaping its future.
Expert: Absolutely. It’s a dynamic situation, and industries involved will need to adapt swiftly as circumstances change. Keeping a keen eye on these developments will ultimately benefit both users and businesses leveraging the platform.
