This is the first major result for the new European law on digital technology. The social network TikTok announced this Monday morning that it will completely withdraw from the EU the operation of its new TikTok Lite application which pays users for the time spent in front of the screens.
“We have accepted the definitive removal of the reward system #TikTok Lite which could have had very addictive consequences”, welcomed the European Commissioner for Digital, Thierry Breton not a bargaining chip for social networks,” added the former French minister.
“We are always looking to participate in effective discussions with the European Commission and other regulators. “TikTok is pleased to have reached an amicable settlement and has removed the TikTok Lite rewards program, which was launched in France and Spain in April, which was previously voluntarily suspended,” a TikTok spokesperson responded.
TikTok, owned by the Chinese group Byte Dance, launched its controversial new service in France and Spain at the end of March before being suspended within the EU a few weeks later after the opening of an investigation by Brussels.

The controversial feature pays users in exchange for watching videos or other actions such as liking videos and following content creators. These virtual coins can be exchanged for gift cards on partner sites. The European Commission then assessed that the device poses “serious risks for the mental health of users”.
Arcom, the French telecommunications regulatory authority, for its part, welcomed, in a press release, the “fruitful cooperation” with the European Commission and all European partners.
This is the first major achievement for the European law on digital services (“Digital Services ACT”, DSA), the goal of which is to regulate online content by forcing large platforms to respect the rules and cooperate including regulators. According to the European Commission, the social network has also committed to “not launch any other program that would circumvent the withdrawal”.
