TikTok removed 10,500 coup videos from January 8 in Brazil – 02/16/2023 – Brazil

by time news

TikTok claims to have removed 10,442 videos that incited violence, terrorism, and misinformation during the Bolsonaro attacks on January 8 and in subsequent days.

It is the only company, so far, that has published internal data on the attacks. In a document delivered to the TSE (Tribunal Superior Eleitoral), the application reports that it removed 1,304 videos that violated its policy of violent extremism (which includes incitement to violence and terrorism), 5,519 that violated the guideline of “disinformation with risks of damage in the real world” and 3,614 contents that violated the rules on electoral misinformation. The period counted was from 8 to 15 January. According to TikTok, only 5 URLs were removed from the STF (Federal Supreme Court) lawsuits on those dates.

The authorities did not request data on January 8, but circumstances led the government to accelerate discussions on the regulation of platforms in Brazil. Even in the Ministry of Justice a proposal for a provisional measure was prepared to curb the circulation of anti-democratic content. Now you must advance under another format.

A recent report from subject matter specialists noted that short video apps, such as those created by TikTok and Kwai, helped exacerbate misinformation during the 2022 election, in part due to the scale of virality of this content. Kwai already warns that he “will not be able to deliver these numbers.”

For their part, Meta (owner of Facebook and Instagram) and YouTube did not disclose their data regarding January 8, only about the electoral process. Telegram and Twitter do not comment.
