Platinum blonde ladies with diamond jewelry and a fur jacket? Yes, where are they on the streets of Berlin? We are talking about the so-called “Mob Wives”. This is what the wives of mafia bosses are called in English, whose slightly trashy 80s look is currently the most talked about style trend of the still young TikTok year 2024.

On the social media platform, Generation Z has just fallen in love with the retro style of the nouveau riche criminal’s wife.

The TikTokers are based on a glamorous diva figure who has become etched in our cultural memory primarily through mafia films and series. As well as Guardian as well as New York Times suspect that the trend was triggered in January primarily by the HBO advertising campaign for the 25th anniversary of the mafia series “Sopranos”. Edie Falco played the role of gangster mom Carmela Soprano, and her look is often quoted on TikTok. Just like Ginger from “Casino”, played by Sharon Stone.

In some fashion magazines, the Mob Wife is also interpreted as an antagonist of Quiet Luxury; i.e. as a counterpart to a trend that has been celebrating “quiet outfits” since around the middle of last year. The many advertising campaigns with more mature women could also have contributed to the popularization of this female persona (a mafia boss is usually already in his 50s – correspondingly, the wife of his children is no longer the youngest).

In real life, however, the women in mafia structures have little to laugh about because they and their families are always in danger. In addition to the Mob Wives, this also applies to the Mob Sisters or Mob Daughters, like Victoria Gotti from the famous Gotti Camorra clan. Visually, Donatella Versace could also be a real mafia sister, even if her brother Gianni Versace’s connections to the underworld have not been clarified to this day.

But back to Germany and Berlin: Here we are still on the lookout for the fashionable mob wife offspring – but we just can’t spot them. We explain why.

1. Rejection of classic role models

It would be unreasonable for the proud Berlin women to have to squeeze into traditional role models. The wife of a mafioso is primarily a housewife and mother. She doesn’t say a word about the family’s machinations and submissively stays in the background. The man is the doer. For this reason she is adorned with jewelry, honored and executed.

2. Fur coats are frowned upon in Berlin

Whether real fur or plastic mink, neither is good. The enlightened population of Berlin in particular is very skeptical about this item of clothing at the moment. The sustainable way to get the cozy pieces would just be to buy them in a vintage shop. But if you then have to explain to everyone where the fur comes from and that neither fresh blood nor oil was used for it, the whole thing is no longer fun.

3. Cobblestones, damaged sidewalks, Uber instead of limousine

There’s a reason why everyone in Berlin wears boots: the elegant high heels of the mobster women would be worn out in no time in the bumpy capital. In addition, it rains more often in this country than in Italy and limousines with a driver have no tradition in my-car-am-me Germany; That means the quick death of the real leather soles of Jimmy Choos, Louboutins or Manolos! The look fails in Berlin for technical reasons.

4. Blingbling is considered uneducational in Germany

The older generations in particular immediately assign facial tans, false eyelashes and nails to precarious sections of the population in the outskirts. This can be a hurdle in everyday life, be it at the bakery or in the office. Mob Wives often wear white or pastel colors, which is also not popular in Berlin; Because black streetwear reigns supreme here. It’s not for nothing that Anna-Maria Ferchichi, Berlin’s only real mob wife to date, has long since left the city with her husband Bushido for Dubai.

The conclusion: women players have better chances in Berlin

If TikTok soon deals with the “gamer wife” type, then it would be a real alternative to the mob wife for Berlin. Because: A pimped-up look consisting of a jogging suit, a luxury men’s watch, sneakers, etc. is perfect for our capital. Don’t forget gel fingernails and anklets!
