This Monday, August 7, TikTok announced the launch of its Gimme The Mic music contest, in which the winner will be able to take “50,000” TikTok diamonds, which would be equivalent to about $2,500 dollars.

The competition will be global and will be done live on the platform, in which the same users will vote for their favorites. The contest, in which only those over 18 years of age may participate, will be divided into three stages: auditions, semifinals and the grand final.

To participate in the audition, users must post a video of at least 30 seconds in which they demonstrate their talent with the hashtag #GIMMETHEMIC between August 7 and 16.

The 30 most popular submissions will then advance to the semifinal, where they will pair up and perform in a live streamed event. Live viewers will be able to vote for their favorites to move forward. In the case of the United States, those “face to face” of the semifinals will be broadcast from the @tiktoklive_us account between September 1 and 3.

To the gringo final, which will be on September 10, 10 contestants will pass, and the winner will receive a prize of 50,000 Diamonds (TikTok’s digital currency). However, the platform did not specify what its equivalent in dollars would be, although The Verge, a specialized technology medium, calculates that it would be $2,500 dollars.

Then, the winners of each country will participate in the world final between September 22 and 23.

“In recent years, TikTok has become something of a hitmaker. Old songs that go viral reappear on the Billboard charts, and short snippets of songs by relatively unknown artists become hits. The Gimme The Mic contest could be another way for musicians to achieve success, but the initial rewards of winning the contest seem disappointing, and that’s saying it well.
