TikTok will protect European users’ data in an ‘enclave’

by time news

Time.news – TikTok runs for cover and after the request to uninstall the app from the service smartphones of the European Commission and the prospect of the same happening with those of the public administration in Italy, announces a project to protect the data of users of the Old Continent.

The system, called Clover, will create a self-governing European enclave for the data of TikTok users from the UK and the European Economic Area. “It will introduce” says the company, “several new measures aimed at strengthening the already existing data protection system”.

Based on the US approach to data security, TikTok will enhance current data access controls by introducing new security gateways which will enable employee access to and transfer of UK and European TikTok user data. “In addition to complying with current data protection regulations, any access to data will therefore have to both first pass through these security gateways and pass further checks,” reads a note.

TikTok will also appoint a European third-party data security specialist as a partner, who will oversee and audit the data protection and controls process, monitor data flow and provide independent audits and reporting on any anomalies.

Complementing the European data center in Dublin announced last year, TikTok today confirmed details with respect to two new sites: a second data center in Dublin and a third in the Hamar region of Norway. The latter will work using 100% renewable energy. TikTok has already started storing European user data in Ireland and will continue the process in 2023 and 2024. Once completed, the three data centers will be the storage sites for European TikTok user data with a total annual investment of €1.2 billion.
