Tim Curry, the British actor known for his creation of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the cult classic film The Rocky Horror Picture Show
and the clown Pennywise in the 1990 adaptation of Stephen King’s It,
has died at his Los Angeles home at the age of 80.
While fans anticipated his enduring legacy on stage and screen, news broke that the versatile performer passed away peacefully at his Toluca Lake home. His longtime manager and friend, Marcia Hurwitz, confirmed the death to various news outlets, though a specific cause was not immediately disclosed. Law enforcement sources noted that police responded to his residence late Tuesday night, confirming no foul play was suspected.
From West End Stages to Transylvanian Stardom
He began his professional acting career in 1968 in the London company of Hair.
Curry originally starred in the stage production The Rocky Horror Show
at London’s Royal Court Theatre before bringing the role to Broadway and the 1975 screen adaptation. Reflecting on the part in a 1975 London TV interview, Curry said, I was hesitant in that, if it worked, it might be a difficult image to shake off.
He added, But really, I’ve often thought that it wasn’t worth doing unless you took a risk.
Though initially ignored by critics, the film developed a second life as a midnight movie phenomenon, giving generations of fans a safe harbor for self-expression.
A Career Defined by Fearless Physical Transformations
Curry’s career expanded far beyond midnight screenings. He collected three Tony nominations and an Emmy nod across five decades. His Tony nods included originating the role of Mozart in Amadeus
in 1981, playing Alan Swann in My Favorite Year
in 1993, and starring as King Arthur in Monty Python’s Spamalot
in 2005. He also won a Daytime Emmy Award for voicing Captain Hook on the animated series Peter Pan and the Pirates.
His screen work was marked by physical transformations. Beyond Dr. Frank-N-Furter, he played the arch-villain Darkness beneath five hours of elaborate makeup in Ridley Scott’s Legend
in 1985 and the clown Pennywise in the 1990 television miniseries adaptation of It.
Director Tommy Lee Wallace recalled working with him on the production, stating, My job was to give Tim the stage and not get in his way too much.
Memorable Film Roles and Later Life Resilience
Beyond horror and camp, Curry carved out a niche in ensemble comedies and family classics. He played the scheming con man Rooster Hannigan in the 1982 musical Annie,
the butler Wadsworth in the mystery board game adaptation Clue,
the Plaza Hotel concierge Mr. Hector in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
in 1992, and the pirate Long John Silver in 1996’s Muppet Treasure Island.
Health challenges slowed his active performance schedule in later years. In 2012, Curry suffered a massive stroke that required brain surgery. Around the time he released his memoir Vagabond,
Tim stated he was still unable to walk.
