Sevilla survive the chaos

Lopetegui’s men save a point with one less in a duel with four penalties, three against, in the first 40 minutes

MADRID, 14 Sep. 2021 (Europa Press) –

Sevilla FC saved this Tuesday a draw in its debut in Group G of the Champions League against Salzburg (1-1), in a duel in which the referee signaled up to four penalties in the first 40 minutes, three to favor of the Austrians and only one successful, and in which Ivan Rakitic rescued a point also from eleven meters before the break.

The clash had only one protagonist: Karim Adeyemi. The German striker forced, in just 35 minutes, the three maximum penalties that the ‘red bulls’ had in the first half, missing the first of them and driving the Sevilla defense crazy under the downpour that received the ‘Champions’ in Nervión, where Rakitic was able to neutralize the visiting goal before the break.

And it is that Julen Lopetegui’s team soon fell into the trap of the Austrians, who executed their plan to perfection and pressed high from the beginning. After eight minutes, Adeyemi forced Bono to act, and only three later did he bring the VAR into play for the first time after being knocked down by Diego Carlos inside the area.

The referee did not hesitate to whistle a penalty and the German went to the eleven meters, but adjusted so much that his shot went brushing the left post of the goal of the Moroccan goalkeeper, who had also guessed his intentions.

However, Sevilla’s joy faded when in the 20th minute Jesús Navas gave the visitors the second maximum penalty by pushing Adeyemi when the ball was lost over the baseline. This time, Luka Sucic did not fail and silenced the Sánchez-Pizjuán.

A cold sweat returned to those present in the Sevillian venue in 35 while the Belarusian Aleksei Kulbakov again pointed out the fateful point in an action in which the ‘Miura’ of the ‘red bulls’ was run over by Bono, his third victim of the afternoon. Again Susic stood before the Sevilla goalkeeper, and this time it was the stick that gave new life to the local team.

As it raged, Lopetegui’s men took advantage of the only chance they had to force what would be the fourth penalty of the match, after Wöber fouled En-Nesyri in the area. There were only three minutes to go until intermission, and captain Ivan Rakitic put Sevilla back in the fight.

En-nesyri leaves sevilla with one less

Lopetegui looked at the bench to give the team a new look at the restart. The Argentine Lucas Ocampos, who made his debut this season after overcoming his injury, and the Danish Thomas Delaney entered the field to try to regain the initiative, but the expulsion of Youssef En-Nesyri upset all plans.

The Moroccan striker saw the second yellow for simulating inside the area, and the referee sent him to the changing rooms. In superiority, Solet missed a very clear chance only under sticks that the line finally annulled for offside.

Only the entrance of Erik Lamela allowed the Nervionense team to forget fear, lifting the public from their seats with a couple of plays to frame. The ‘Bombonera’ of Nervión recovered his voice to support his team in the final stretch, but the result did not move and the fans sighed. It was no wonder: Sevilla had avoided the pillory.
