Nurse Lucy Letby to Stand Trial for the Murder of Seven Babies
Manchester Crown Court has begun the trial of nurse Lucy Letby, who is accused of the murders of seven babies and the attempted murders of 10 others. Letby, a former nurse at the Countess of Chester Hospital, was arrested in July 2018 following an investigation into a higher number of baby deaths and collapses between June 2015 and June 2016.
The trial, which began on October 4th, 2022, provided a detailed timeline of the events surrounding the investigation. The key dates revealed a series of concerning incidents that raised suspicions regarding Letby’s involvement.
The investigation began in 2015 when a baby girl, known as Child D, died 36 hours after birth. This death marked the third infant death in a fortnight at the neonatal unit. Shortly after, a meeting took place between neonatal lead consultant Dr. Stephen Brearey, director of nursing Alison Kelly, and other hospital bosses. The meeting discussed an informal review conducted by Dr. Brearey, which identified an “association” between Letby and the recent collapses.
In subsequent months, more concerning incidents occurred, including the sudden collapse and death of a prematurely born baby boy, Child E, as well as the high insulin levels found in blood samples of Child F. Concerns were raised by consultants and a “thematic” review was conducted, but no reason for the increased deaths and collapses was found. Letby continued to work on the unit until June 30, 2016, despite pleas from colleagues to remove her.
In July 2017, Cheshire Police launched an investigation into the neonatal unit. The investigation focused on eight deaths, but later expanded to include 17 deaths and 15 non-fatal collapses between March 2015 and July 2016. Letby was arrested in July 2018 and again in June 2019. She was finally charged with the murders and attempted murders in November 2020.
The trial is expected to shed further light on the evidence against Letby and the circumstances surrounding the tragic deaths of the babies under her care. It is a significant case that has garnered widespread attention and has prompted discussions about patient safety and the accountability of healthcare professionals.
