On the afternoon of October 23, information from Military Hospital 175, Ho Chi Minh City, the Hospital’s Air Emergency Team, and the helicopter of Army Corps 18 (Ministry of National Defense) promptly brought 2 critically ill patients. in the Truong Sa Islands (Khanh Hoa province) to the mainland for emergency treatment.

Previously, at 1:00 a.m. on October 22, fisherman NS (born in 1984) felt tired, dizzy, and had muscle pain in his legs after diving deep in Truong Sa waters for about 120 minutes.

At about 4 a.m. the same day, Mr. NS dived into the sea to re-pressurize for about 4 more hours. When he got back to shore, because his condition did not improve, he continued diving in the water tank until 12 noon when his illness got worse.

This fisherman was then taken to Song Tu Tay Island Hospital at 3:25 p.m. on the same day in a state of whole body pain, quadriplegia, muscle strength 3/5, circular muscle disorder, urinary retention, and anuria. .

Song Tu Tay Island Hospital quickly consulted with doctors from the Naval Medical Institute, Central Military Hospital 108, and Military Hospital 175.

Doctors concluded that Mr. NS had severe decompression after diving 30m deep for the 18th hour, causing a multi-organ air embolism.

Because the victim’s prognosis was very serious and beyond the island’s military medical capacity to treat, doctors decided to transport the patient to Military Hospital 175, Ho Chi Minh City for timely treatment.

Receiving the order, the Air Rescue Team of Military Hospital 175, along with the EC 225 helicopter number VN8619 of Army Corps 18, set out to Truong Sa to transport victims to the mainland.

During the flight to Song Tu Tay island, the air ambulance team received an order from the Ministry of Defense to transport one more victim to Sinh Ton island.

The victim suffered a severe brain injury, with a closed 1/3 fracture of the left midclavicular bone due to a fall. The victim was intubated, ventilated and transported with the NS patient on a flight to the mainland for treatment.

Lieutenant, Doctor Nguyen Van Nghia, Team Leader of the Airborne Emergency Team, said that the most difficult part of this emergency flight was having to travel to two different islands, performing the takeoff and landing process many times. .

Each takeoff and landing is a change in pressure that increases the risk of air bubbles re-forming in the blood vessels, worsening the embolism of patients with decompression sickness.

“Initially, the Road Emergency Team did not only prepare a situation for one person, so the issue of medicine and oxygen for the second person was also a challenge. At the same time, the weather was bad, there was heavy rain, and the helicopter had to land to refuel at Truong Sa Island, affecting the time it took to transport the victims to the mainland,” Dr. Nghia shared.

Overcoming obstacles and difficulties, at 2:00 p.m. on October 23, the EC 225 helicopter, number VN8619, landed safely on the apron of the Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology building, Military Hospital 175.

The victims were transported to the Emergency Department, Military Hospital 175 with moderate vital signs. Doctors are consulting to find the next treatment direction./.
