The urban local elections were held in a single phase yesterday. Elections were held yesterday for 33 wards in Villupuram district, Tindivanam municipality. Voting for the 13th ward took place at a government-aided school in Tindivanam. In this ward, Sudha Saravanan from the DMK and Babu from the DMK contested as councilors. As the polls closed yesterday, both sides reportedly campaigned for voters in the afternoon. Then there was an argument between the two sides and it turned into a scuffle.
Subsequently, the police rushed in and compromised. In this situation, the AIADMK candidate Sudha’s party went to the Tindivanam next Roshana police station at 9 pm last night to lodge a complaint alleging that they were being intimidated. It is said that DMK candidate Babu’s party, who went there knowing this information, attacked DMK candidate Sudha and his family inside the police station and escaped.
Subsequently, the injured AIADMK candidate Sudha Mundiyambakkam was admitted to the Government General Hospital for treatment.
The incident caused a great stir in the area. DIG Pandian and SB Srinatha, who knew the information, went in person and conducted an investigation. More than 50 AIADMK activists who went to the police station after learning that the AIADMK candidate and his family had been attacked have been involved in a heated argument. In this context, former minister CV Shanmugam, who was present at the Roshan police station, urged the DIG and the SP to “arrest the attackers immediately”. Following that, he visited Sudha, who was receiving treatment at the hospital, and inquired about her health.
The incident in which an AIADMK candidate who had come to lodge a complaint and took refuge in a police station was allegedly assaulted by supporters of the DMK candidate has caused a great stir in the Tindivanam area.
