Tips for harmonious wall decoration

by times news cr

Mark the hole, drill the hole and attach a dowel: It’s actually quite easy to attach a picture to the wall.
But if you have a clear idea of the wall decoration in advance and arrange all the picture frames correctly, you can enjoy a functional and at the same time decorative wall design.

Useful information about suitable wall design

Matching pictures can fulfill very individual tasks in a room. The illustrations can surprise, calm or specifically arouse certain emotions.

Hobby decorators should think in advance about what mood the picture arrangement should create.

Ideally, the images fit seamlessly into the entire room concept or furnishings. When choosing picture frames, you should also decide whether several small pictures should form a large ensemble or whether a single large picture should attract attention instead. While pictures that are too large and fill the wall appear overloaded in a small room, even a single small picture appears lost on a large wall.

Good to know: Grouping pictures horizontally makes a room appear visually wider. Vertically arranged pictures make walls appear higher.

Arrange groups of pictures effectively

One advantage of groups of images is that you can adapt these groups individually to external circumstances. To arrange images in different formats, you should align the works on imaginary reference axes; this works particularly well with the so-called string trick.
These reference axes are vertical and horizontal lines along which the edges of the image run. At the center of such a group of images is always a larger image or motif with particular meaning. That’s why you can arrange several small or medium-sized images.

Placing works in an imaginary frame

Another solution for an attractive arrangement of pictures of different sizes is to mount them within an external imaginary frame. Possible options include areas arranged in a rectangle or square, circles or crosses. The distances play an important role in this method. Ideally, no work is placed too close or too far from the other images.

To be on the safe side, always test the arrangements on the ground first.

With a little painter’s tape you can then determine the outer frame, determine the correct distances and only then drive the nails into the wall. Because the human eye is particularly familiar with geometric shapes such as squares, these arrangements look great on most walls. Round arrangements of the pictures look particularly original on the wall.

The right proportions and height

Large images are particularly effective in spatially defined areas. Suitable areas are wall areas above a dresser, above a couch or between two windows.

According to a basic rule, a picture is ideally about a quarter to a third as wide as pieces of furniture in the immediate vicinity. The correct position for a piece of furniture is with the center of the image slightly below eye level. If you want to hang several pictures above the furniture, around 30 centimeters above the edge of the sofa creates a particularly harmonious arrangement. In order to view an image predominantly while sitting, the image height should be adjusted to the sitting position.

Choosing a suitable color

White walls are ideal as a background. However, if the wall color picks up a color from the picture, the work looks particularly visually appealing. A passe-partout creates a lot of calm on patterned wallpaper and successfully highlights the photo motif.

Glue or drill pictures?

Nails, screws or dowels ensure that a picture hangs securely on the wall.

If you don’t want to damage your own wall and want to hang up small pictures, you can use adhesive nails, adhesive strips or adhesive hooks for hanging.

However, the adhesive surfaces should be cleaned in advance. An alternative to classic picture hangings are picture rails, thanks to which hobby decorators can redecorate the pictures if desired in just a few simple steps. This makes it easy to swap out motifs and images.

Hanging pictures on the wall: Suitable utensils

To hang pictures safely on the wall, do-it-yourselfers need a spirit level, a hammer, nails, a wire finder, paper, scissors and a pencil. You should definitely attach large and heavy pictures with a drill, screws and dowels. The larger and heavier a picture is, the larger the screws and nails used should be.

On a porous wall, screws offer more security than nails. If you want to be on the safe side and hang a very heavy picture, you should first check the substance of the walls. A hammer drill is required for a hard concrete wall and a cordless or impact drill is required for a soft brick or sandstone wall.
