Degradation of nerve cells due to air pollution: Scientists at the IUF – Leibniz Institute for Environmental Medicine Research in Düsseldorf were able to show that tire wear, age and temperature accelerate neurodegeneration in models of the nematode C. elegans for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

The first association with air pollution is usually car exhaust, but tire wear is also a part of it.

In addition to genetic factors and age, air pollution is also one of the risk factors for diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s. The first association with air pollution is mostly car exhaust, but tire wear is also part of it. Against this background, Professor Anna von Mikecz’s working group investigated the influence of tire wear and age on models of the nematode C. elegans for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. As an additional factor, also with regard to global warming, the experiments were carried out at different temperatures executed.

Silicon dioxide from tire abrasion in focus

At the study came exemplary for a tire component is silicon dioxide (Nano-Silica; SiO2) for use. The working group has already looked at these small particles in another context: They are called Food additive against caking used and showed negative effects when ingested by the nematode with food. In the current study, published in the journal Environmental Pollution, there were also negative effects when the nematode ingested the silicon dioxide from the environment. The degradation of nerve cells was observed. That was particularly vulnerable Alzheimer’s model of the nematode, in which a decreased nerve function was measured. In the Parkinson-Modell he showed himself Breakdown of nerve cells that produce dopamine.

The conclusion: All three factors, tire wear, age and 25 degrees accelerated the breakdown of nerve cells in models of the nematode for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Cold prolongs healthy life span

“In our group, we have investigated the influence of temperature on the degeneration of neurons for the first time and the results are really exciting,” reports Professor Anna von Mikecz. “Investigations in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s models of the nematode show us that Cold extends their healthy lifespan. This also coincides with the observations made by a research team from Cologne, which were only recently published.” The future will show to what extent these results can also be transferred to humans. The investigations of other tire components as well as urban air samples are planned as the next work in the Mikecz AG.

The model organism Caenorhabditis elegans

The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is common in the aging research to use: He is a multicellular organism with one short life cycle and an average lifespan of 15 to 20 days. Its genome has been fully sequenced and more than 60 percent of its genes have the same structure and function as human genes. The worm is very small, 1 mm in length, transparent, and has well-characterized phenotypes (appearances) and behaviors. Surprisingly, some age-related traits observed in humans are also found in C. elegans: with age, tissues regress, physiological functions and stress resistance decline, and mortality increases. These evolutionarily conserved traits can be found in C. elegans under the Microscope are examined in order to explore the effects of genetic influences and environmental influences on the aging process and to gain important insights for human health.
