London: The wreck of the Titanic is rapidly decaying. A bacteria is eating it away and it could disappear completely in the next six years. New pictures of the Titanic wreck show the ship sinking to the sea floor. The team researching the wreck has found that the ship is breaking into pieces and large parts are scattered on the sea floor. This is happening because this 112-year-old wreck is decaying rapidly. Scientists have revealed that bacteria are eating away the metal structure of this iconic ship, creating stalactites (rusticles). These are rapidly destroying the wreck of the ship.
According to The Sun report, experts have named the bacteria eating the Titanic as ‘Halomonas Titanica’. Experts believe that they will eat the entire ship by 2030. New information revealed on the wreck shows that the wreck is rapidly decomposing after more than a century on the seabed. This year, RMS Titanic Inc. found that a large part of the ship’s front railing is now lying on the seabed due to hungry microorganisms. Experts believe that about 15 feet of railing had fallen in the last two years, as it was digitally scanned in 2022 and is still intact – showing the speed at which the wreck is rotting.

Rotting growing in the interior of the ship

Experts believe the ship’s interior is decaying rapidly because the passageways accessible to submarines have now collapsed. Photos taken of a bathtub from Captain Edward Smith’s quarters in 1996 can be clearly seen, but photos taken of the same bathtub in 2004 show how quickly bacteria destroyed the interior. Even that room no longer exists. The interior of the wreck has rapidly deteriorated.

Victor Vescovo, the leader of the Titanic expedition, says that the wreck of the ship has been submerged in strong currents and sea water for 107 years. Since the discovery of the wreck in 1985, there has been a constant demand to bring the remains of the ship to the surface. This pressure increased further after the release of the Titanic film in 1997. At the same time, experts claim that it would be impossible to raise the ship in this condition. It is believed that if the ship is tampered with, its remaining part will disintegrate and get destroyed.

In 1998, RMS Titanic Inc., which owns the salvage rights to the Titanic, managed to successfully raise an incredible 20-tonne section of the ship. They have so far recovered 5,500 items from the wreck. These include jewellery, toys, utensils and ship equipment.
