The women of VfL Wolfsburg around Alexandra Popp are the top favorites in the further title fight of the Bundesliga. The coach sees the championship and the renewed cup triumph as a duty.
Despite a clear lead, the footballers at VfL Wolfsburg want to tackle the Bundesliga 2023 in a highly focused and highly motivated manner. “We have to remain vigilant in all areas. We can’t buy anything with the past,” said Tommy Stroot, the coach of the German champions and DFB Cup winners. But he also emphasized: “We know that we have a duty to achieve these two national titles. Anything else would be unbelievable.”
The Wolfsburg women had not lost a single game in the league and in the DFB Cup in 2022. They play their first league game of the new year on Saturday (2 p.m. / MagentaSport) at SC Freiburg. The VfL team leads the table with a five-point lead over FC Bayern Munich. “We’re seeing really high quality teams. Bayern are evolving, Frankfurt are evolving,” warned 34-year-old Stroot. “We know that absolutely nothing is given to us and that opponents against us will be highly motivated to break streaks, in the DFB Cup or in the league.”
In the cup, VfL, who have won the cup eight times in a row, will play at 1. FC Köln on February 28th. In the Champions League, the quarter-final draw with Wolfsburg and FC Bayern is scheduled for February 10th. “We know that it’s unpredictable, especially at international level. We’re extremely happy to be in the quarter-finals,” said Stroot. (dpa)
