Local public broadcaster NHK reported that two giant pandas at Ueno Zoo in Tokyo, Japan returned to China on the 29th.

Citizens wore matching black clothes to see them off, and some shed tears, expressing their disappointment at saying goodbye.

According to the media, the male giant pandas ‘Liri’ and the female ‘Sing Sing’ left Ueno Zoo in the early morning of this day and headed to China.

Lili and Xingxing are the father and mother of Xiangxiang, a panda that was returned to China in February last year.

The two pandas, born in China in 2005, were brought in on loan by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in 2011 for joint research on giant panda conservation and breeding with the Chinese Wildlife Conservation Society. He is 19 years old this year, which is equivalent to 60 years old in human years.

While living in Tokyo, Japan, this panda couple had a total of three children, including the female ‘Xiang Xiang’ and the twins ‘Xiao Xiao’ and ‘Lei Lei’. It was scheduled to be returned in February 2026 according to the agreement between the two countries.

However, starting in 2022, he showed signs of worsening health due to old age, such as high blood pressure, and decided that treatment was necessary, so he returned to his hometown, China, ahead of schedule.

Pandas Li Li and Xing Xing are scheduled to enter China’s Giant Panda Conservation and Research Center after their return.

NHK explained, “When Riri and Sing Sing left the zoo at 4 a.m. that day, dozens of fans flocked to them, taking pictures and waving hands, even though it was early in the morning, expressing regret over their separation.”

The zoo explained that on the day before, which was the last public day before returning to China, about 2,000 citizens visited Ueno Zoo to see them for the last time.
