This is the story of one such dream come true, a girl named Dr. Tulasi, who has become a part of the history of Attappadi Adivasi Ur. Tulasi is the first woman doctor to complete MS surgery from Irula department.
Tulasi’s biggest inspirations are her father Muthuswamy and mother Kaliyamma who cherished her dream more than anything else. To teach Tulsi, who was very good at studies, they rushed to the fields and fields with their trunks tight. Knowing that she had a long history of toil and social rejection behind her, the girl rose to the top in every class. They are the pride and inspiration of Attapadi
Primary education at Kavundikal Tamil Medium Government LP School, a government school near home. Later studies were in Palakkad Agali School. Live stock management, a vocational course, was for Plustu. Tulsi nurtured her childhood dream of becoming a doctor. The girl secured a seat in Thiruvananthapuram Medical College without any entrance coaching or other training fuss.
It was 22 years after Tulasi and another girl named Lakshmpriya got admission in MBBS after a woman doctor from the tribal community. In 1995, Dr. Kamalakshi, a Muduka woman from Chittoor Ur, became the first doctor.
Even when she graduated with her MBBS degree in 2017, Tulsi was not ready to give up on her dreams. Tulasi PG got admission in Thiruvananthapuram Medical College itself. Father and mother provided all the support. When the result came, Tulsi became the first woman doctor to graduate from Irula category in MS surgery department.
Tulsi is not ready to go full stop in her studies here either. After completing her MS residency, Tulsi decided to enroll for post graduation in MCh pediatric surgery (super specialty).
