A recent scientific study found that using mental skills effectively while working at an early age helps prevent mental deterioration in old age and reduces the risk of dementia, according to the American CNN network.

The study, published in the American Journal of Neuroscience, analyzed the health and occupational data of 7,000 Norwegians, who were followed from their 30s until they retired in their 60s.

Researchers at the University of Oslo in Norway found that lack of mental stimulation in routine work during the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s increases the risk of cognitive impairment by 66 percent and the risk of dementia by 37 percent after the age of 70.

Trine Edwin, a researcher at Oslo University Hospital in Norway, said: “The results of the study show the importance of having a profession that requires more complex thinking, to preserve memory in old age.”

Edwin added, “The study demonstrated that the workplace is important in enhancing cognitive health.”

“Engaging in life activity, maintaining a sense of purpose, learning new things, and being socially active are all powerful tools to protect against cognitive decline as we age,” said Richard Isaacson, director of research at the Florida Neurological Institute.

“Just as physical exercise can be used to build and maintain muscle, training the brain through work tasks helps prevent dementia,” said Isaacson, who was not involved in the new study.

The study indicated that adopting a brain-healthy lifestyle, following a good diet, limiting alcohol and stopping smoking, and avoiding high blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol, are all factors that can contribute to avoiding dementia.
