To resolve the Central Bank crisis… the UN mission intends to hold an emergency meeting

by times news cr

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya expressed its deep regret over the situation in Libya as a result of unilateral decisions, considering that insisting on these decisions or continuing to take more of them will have a heavy cost for the Libyan people, and will expose the country to the risk of financial and economic collapse.

The mission noted in a statement that, based on its mandate stipulated in Security Council Resolution No. 2702 of 2023, especially with regard to conflict prevention, it intends to hold an emergency meeting attended by the parties concerned with the Central Bank of Libya crisis to reach a consensus based on political agreements and applicable laws, and on the principle of the independence of the Central Bank and ensuring the continuity of public service.

The UN mission also called for taking the following steps, which it described as urgent:

  • Suspension of all unilateral decisions related to the Central Bank of Libya
  • Immediately lift the force majeure on the oil fields and stop involving the country’s main source of income in political conflicts.
  • Stop escalation and refrain from using force to achieve political goals or sectarian benefits.
  • Ensuring the safety of Central Bank employees and protecting them from threats and arbitrary arrest

The mission stressed that resolving this emerging crisis is an urgent necessity to create favourable conditions for a comprehensive political process, under the auspices of the United Nations and with the support of the international community, the aim of which is to put Libya back on the track of national elections, including through agreement on a unified government, to end the crisis of the erosion of the legitimacy of institutions and their division.
