The chief adviser of the interim government has given three proposals to the United Nations on the issue of the return of a large number of Rohingya people who have taken refuge in Bangladesh. Muhammad Yunus.

He held a high-level meeting on the Rohingya crisis on the first day of the 79th General Session of the United Nations. The meeting was held on Tuesday (September 24) at 3pm local time in New York.

Dr. United Nations. This multilateral meeting is the first manifestation of the special importance facing the Rohingya crisis among Yunus’ various activities.

The meeting was co-hosted by Indonesia, The Gambia, Türkiye, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union as a side event to the General Session. In his speech as a key-note speaker, the Chief Advisor presented three recommendations.

In the first proposal, he said, the UN Secretary General can quickly organize a conference with all stakeholders to deal with the Rohingya crisis. This conference will assess the overall situation and determine creative and forward-looking approaches.

Secondly, the ‘Joint Response Plan’ between the United Nations and Bangladesh should be accelerated and finally the international community should support the prosecution and accountability of crimes such as the genocide against the Rohingya community.

At this time, the chief adviser also told the world leaders that Bangladesh has sheltered about 1.2 million Rohingya refugees. Every year 32 thousand new born children are added to the population of Bangladesh. In the last 2 months, 20,000 new refugees have entered Bangladesh.

In addition to being sympathetic to refugees, the crisis carries social, economic and environmental threats to Bangladesh. This is also giving rise to traditional and non-traditional security crises. Bangladesh’s own development goals are stalled by the Rohingya crisis. Bangladesh has reached the peak of its potential.

Dr. Yunus also said that several UN General Sessions, the Human Rights Council and even the Security Council have taken initiatives for the safe and honorable return of the Rohingya people to Myanmar. But since the root of the crisis in Myanmar has not been resolved, none of the initiatives have worked and not a single Rohingya has been sent back to Myanmar in the past 7 years.

The increase in the number of youth in Rohingya refugee camps has added a new level of security risk to the whole issue. Myanmar needs to build an inclusive society where people of all communities can live in peace.

Finally, Prof. Yunus reiterated his commitment to work together with stakeholders on the rights, dignity and security of Rohingya refugees. He ended his speech with the message of overcoming the crisis through political solutions.
