Today is International Literacy Day national

International Literacy Day has been celebrated on September 8 worldwide since 1967 and in independent Bangladesh since 1972.

On the occasion of the day, President Md. Sahabuddin, chief advisor. Muhammad Yunus, Adviser and Secretary, Ministry of Primary and Mass Education delivered the message.

The theme of this year’s International Literacy Day set by UNESCO for all countries of the world is ‘Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace.’ Which in Bengali, ‘Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace.’

Although there are differences in the definition of literacy in different countries of the world, in 1967 UNESCO set a universal definition. Then only one who could write his name was called literate. The definition has changed almost every decade since then, and a 1993 definition states that a person must meet three conditions to be literate. One. Individuals can read simple and short sentences in their own language. Two. Can write simple and short sentences in own language. Three. Can do general calculations of daily life.

Literacy and development are linked. Illiteracy is a hindrance to development. The knowledge and skills needed to build a sustainable society can only be acquired through literacy. Right to free compulsory education has been inserted in Article 17 of the Constitution of Bangladesh with a view to free the nation from the curse of illiteracy for the economic emancipation of people in independent Bangladesh.

Like other countries of the world, Bangladesh is also celebrating the day with due dignity through various programs. On this occasion, the non-formal education bureau under the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education has organized a discussion meeting today at the non-formal education bureau in Tejgaon of the capital. Advisor to the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education Professor Dr. Bidhan Ranjan Roy Poddar will be present as the chief guest in the event. Farid Ahmed, secretary of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, will be present as a special guest.
