TODAY’S WOMAN #2 – Hedy Lamarr

From Hollywood Actress to Army Inventor

“… With the outbreak of World War II, Hedy offered her services to the United States government, since she had classified information about the German army’s armaments. Placed in the military technology department, Hedy realized that the radio signals that guided the American army’s torpedoes were very easy to intercept. It was then that she developed, together with her friend the composer George Antheil, a system for detecting radio-controlled torpedoes. Inspired by a musical principle, it worked on eighty-eight frequencies, the equivalent of piano keys, and was able to make the transmission signals jump between the frequencies of the magnetic spectrum.
At the time, the military failed to appreciate the usefulness of the invention that Hedy was offering them, until many years later, in 1962, there was the Cuban missile crisis. Then Lamarr’s technology was used to intercept communications and control torpedoes. Even today that system is used for satellite localization systems, such as GPS, which was the precursor to wifi”.
